WWOOF take 2...

Well, here I am again!

I can't believe it's SIX YEARS almost to the DAY that I had my last blog post....

And I've been a little busy in that time!

*thinks*

I came back to York, worked as a Montessori Pre School Room Lead, moved to London to do a MSc in Dance Science, stayed on as Intern, started a job as Montessori Room Lead in London, moved back to Malton, worked again as a Montessori Room Lead,

Turned 30...re-evaluated my life (as we all do when we turn 30)

Became a self-employed therapist in The Emmett Technique, became an EMM-Tech tutor, became an Emmett Practitioner for Dogs, became a trainee instructor for the Dog Course....

...and back to travelling :)

Oh and during that time met the love of my life Dan and got engaged. (Dan says hi).

I guess quite a lot in 6 years really.

So this time round the blog is a little more focused, hopefully more regular, and a way to record my experiences to share with you all, (and a way of remembering them myself!)

I hope you enjoy this journey of ours, it's going to be a fun few months, and hopefully you might learn a few things too!

xx

P.S. I do that Twitter and Instagram thing now....

Wwoof and Twitter

Hello! I'm home (early) due to Wales being rather icy and snowy! I made the decision to just head straight home from Shillingford on Sunday, as it was starting to look as if I might not be able to get home at all!
Since returning home, there's been a large pile of post waiting for me. The first one I chose turned out to be the Winter newsletter of Wwoof UK. Yay! Imagine my surprise when I turned to  page 10, (an explanation about Twitter) and saw that my blog address has been tweeted about! Sadly, the address was wrong, so I"m making this post so if people follow the link from twitter they should get this post! Hello! Subscribe! I will add more posts soon!

This has got me thinking, maybe....well, maybe it's time to join Twitter....(gasp!) I know I've always said that it's a step too far, but like all things with power, it can be used for good. So, I've done it....and here is my profile....http://twitter.com/lizthelandgirl

I'm hoping this will help more people see what I'm up to and also for me to get in contact with more people. I'm going to keep it purely related to Wwoof and it also means I can update little bits and bobs more regularly. The slight trouble with blogging is that I want to have enough for a decent post, so I write it all down but never get around to writing it up! I'm hoping with my Twitter account I can get all the little things out there straight away!

We'll see how it goes!

Greetings!

So hi there everyone! Here's my shiny new (first ever) blog. It's going to take me a while to get used to writing this but I hope it's something that will be entertaining to read.

I wanted to set up a blog for a few reasons.

  1. So my mum wouldn't panic while I'm away!!
  2. So I wouldn't forget the amazing times I know I'm going to have. I'm sure there will be ups and downs, and to be honest I just can't wait.
  3. To be able to record all the amazing things there is to learn about this beautiful countryside of ours, and how best to look after it.
So, why am I doing this? And what exactly will I be doing?

Well, first the why? Why do I suddenly want to head off into the rain and the mud, (this is the UK after all), and for a year?!
The simple answer is: I'm not entirely sure! I graduated from Edinburgh University over a year ago now and before that, had my 'Gap Year'. At that point, I just didn't have a travelling itch at all and instead finished off some dancing exams and then began a teaching job at a friend's mum's Montessori Pre-School.
After graduating, I found myself back at that school, and this time, doing a diploma! Most of my friends had by this point started getting 'proper jobs', some heading off to London or others settling down here and there. However, as I get closer to finishing my qualification, I just don't feel ready to settle myself. That combined with a growing interest of environmental issues made me realise that I wanted to go find out things first hand. Which leads me to....

What exactly will I be doing?
With any luck....everything! The initial idea was to sign up for a WWOOFing membership and move around various hosts, learning as much as possible on the way. However, since sitting down and looking into it properly, I've had a few more ideas about what I'd like to do.
Whilst I still have a few main, and basic, aims:

  • learn to grow food...(pretty important)
  • learn to look after animals, (and bees....especially bees!)
  • learn to work harmoniously with the environment and manage it with long term vision
I also have some others. One is inspired by this website I found when researching: FoodCycle. Their mission:
FoodCycle combines young volunteers, surplus food and a free kitchen space to create nutritious meals and positive social change in the community!
So I will at some point hopefully head to one of their outposts and help make a contribution. Something that has cemented that plan for me was this programme I watched tonight: Great British Waste Menu. Just sitting there watching so much food being turned into delicious meals made me hopeful that we can shift public perception of food and also help those who really could do with some good grub inside them.

And so, for an introduction, I think that's it!
